I recently wrote a guest blog for my book publisher, Macmillan International Higher Education:
Arguably the greatest challenge facing work organisations in the coming decades is climate change. From dealing with environmental changes that impact on where and how companies can conduct their business, through issues around sustainable development, to the ultimate effect of these changes on the migration and health of their employees, long term organisational success will be determined by how companies respond to this challenge. For too long, many organisations have adopted a narrow definition of success and high performance, with a focus entirely on creating value for shareholders and a blindness to the wider impact of their actions. Widening our definition of success to include recognition of the organisation’s impact on a wide range of stakeholders gives a much clearer picture of the organisation’s overall and long-term performance. It also enables us to ask the question “Should we admire an organisation’s economic success if it comes at the cost of our planet and human lives?”
